HAYDEN PANETTIERE

It’s hard to know where to begin to describe the most remarkable part of Hayden Panettiere’s short but extraordinary life. Having first appeared on camera at the age of eleven months – in a commercial – she landed the role, aged five, of Sarah Roberts in the TV soap opera One Life to Live, a part she played for three years. She succeeded her period as a child star playing the cellularly-enhanced cheerleader Claire Bennet in the superhero series Heroes (2006–2010), was Kirby Reed in three of the Scream films (2011-2023) and was the lead in the musical series Nashville (2012–2018), for which she was twice nominated for a Golden Globe. She also wrote an autobiography This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was just published this summer, although it already feels an incomplete telling of her life and death.
Five days before her 37th birthday, Hayden was found dead in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, apparently after cardiac arrest. No suspicious circumstances or signs of trauma were recorded, although she had been struggling with drug addiction, alcoholism and depression for years. Following her death, Hayden’s estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, stoked outrage on social media after revealing to NBC News: “I think it becomes very difficult to be true to yourself, and I think Hayden sadly lost her way, and I wish it were different. I wish she had stayed true to herself because she had many incredible attributes.” Tragedy had already racked Vogel’s life when her son, the actor Jansen Panettiere – Hayden’s brother – died of heart complications at the age of 28.
Hayden Panettiere was engaged to the world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko and gave birth to their child Kaya, but transferred custody to Klitschko while she battled with postpartum depression. It is said she was drawn to the Ukrainian boxer because he was so different from her artificial Hollywood colleagues. Had they married, her brother-in-law would have been Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, who is currently contending with his own problems.
On the big screen, Hayden Panettiere made her debut aged eight as a mermaid in the Jennifer Aniston/Paul Rudd romcom The Object of My Affection (1998) and provided her voice for the cartoons A Bug’s Life (1998) and Dinosaur (2000), before making something of an impression in the sports drama Remember the Titans (2000) with Denzel Washington. She played the real-life Sheryl Yoast, daughter of the football coach Bill Yoast (played by Will Patton), who later died of an undetected heart condition when she was just 34-years-old. Hayden then played the daughter of Calista Flockhart in the last series of Ally McBeal (2002) before clocking up further big-screen appearances in Garry Marshall's Raising Helen (2004), the teen romcom I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009) and then the Scream films. She was also an accomplished singer and performed her own songs in Nashville and even released the reggae-influenced single, Wake Up Call, in 2008. Above all, though, she was a hands-on activist, campaigning for the rights of marine life, supporting the dispossessed in Ukraine and fighting to raise awareness of teen pregnancy and domestic violence.
